It is scary to be vulnerable. Whys shouldn’t it be? We want to look confident and know who we are and what we are doing in any given situation. In a perfect world, life would only give us those situations. However without vulnerability, how do we grow and discover more about ourselves?
Many people hold a belief that vulnerability is weakness. And yet, vulnerability is a great tool to help people gain a better understanding of themselves along with learning new skills.
We are vulnerable every time we try something new. Playing on a sports team for the first time makes you vulnerable, painting your first painting, driving for the first time and even starting a new job puts you in a place of vulnerability.
During the first moments of trying something new is a vulnerable time, even practicing something for the past three months consist a level of vulnerability. Until you are confident and comfortable doing what you are doing as you build your skills, you then cross the other side of vulnerability.
The fear of being vulnerable is a large factor of not meeting goals as the fear of failure comes into play. We don’t want to disappoint ourselves and look foolish in-front of other people. It is more common to make goals that are below our means and capabilities, rather than making goals that are on the threshold of our capabilities. We can only go so far in life with only making goals that do not challenge our limits.
With that, I encourage you to put yourself in vulnerable situations more often. When you feel vulnerable often amount of times, vulnerability becomes less scary and embarrassing. In fact when we often place ourselves in vulnerable situations, we tend to have less fear in change and are more open to trying new things. We get comfortable in being uncomfortable, creating a variety of opportunities to grow and reach higher goals.
For a personal goal, I am currently working towards in becoming a skilled Aerial Silk artist. I have always been fascinated by the stunts that go hand-in-hand with circus performances. When I discovered affordable Aerial Silk classes in my town, I have decided to put myself out there and attended to those classes. I have been working towards this goal since March 2024, and I love every minute of it. As there is so much to learn and various skills to build, I am in a place of vulnerability every class, however I have become comfortable with being uncomfortable at my studio. Not only do I get to build a wicked skill, I get to also connect with like-minded individuals who also have a love with the performing arts.
If you have a dream, let’s say in becoming a famous singer, you need to constantly put yourself out there. Posting only one or a few videos online of yourself singing will more than likely do nothing. More than often, you will need to put yourself in vulnerable situations often to help reach your goals. Keep posting your videos online of yourself singing. Keep making music, connect with other people with the same dream and connect with people working in that business. To see change, you will need to work on your goals everyday to see results. With persistence, the fear of vulnerability has no power over you. Fear itself is an illusion.
To help overcome the fear of vulnerability, have conversations with yourself to help minimize that fear. Overtime you won’t need to have those conversations, it will come naturally to you, growth will come naturally.
Be persistent, do not fear vulnerability, and believe in yourself!
