Throughout life, we will face situations that will make our blood boil, that will make us feel grief, feel guilt, and many more negative emotions. Naturally, we try to avoid those feelings as they make us feel uncomfortable, such as repressing those emotions and act out on them and express them in an unhealthy manner without or with our awareness.

As we may act on our emotions unconsciously, we may experience negative consequences, such as hurting other emotionally by saying hurtful things, passing up great opportunities for growth, physically damaging our own property, and losing strong connections with loved ones.

As life comes with struggles and hard times along with good times, it is important to get skilled on regulating our emotions. Emotional regulation techniques allows us to control how we react in emotionally heightened situations, maintain our sense of self, maintain positive relationships, and maintain a strong skill of self-control.

There are various ways you can do to help regulate your emotions! This can be going for a walk, reading a book, talking to a trusted friend, imagining a peaceful place, and mediation.

It is critical to practice strategies during when in calm moments to help train your brain and body for those times. You do not run a marathon without training. Pick strategies that best suit and interest you as you are the one practicing them.

When we regulate our emotions during heightened times, we become in control of our reactions and not having our emotions make the decisions for us. We become balanced enough to make radical decisions, or become in-tuned that we consciously take a step back as we become aware that we should not make a decision at the present time.

When we are regulated, we are balanced within. Our waters are calm and we take control of how a situation is impacting us. As we cannot control most situations, it is critical to control on how we react to all situations, both the ones we can and cannot control.

Regulating emotions can help all aspects of life, our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual aspects. Emotionally, we become more in control and feel better when regulated. I am not saying that we shouldn’t feel any negative emotion. As life goes on, we are allowed to feel stress, grief, anxiety, and sadness. However with that noted, try not to have those emotions overcome you and react to situations in a negative manner. Additionally emotionally, we feel better overall when we are able to regulate our emotions.

Mentally, we become clear with our thinking patterns and decision making. We are aware of how we are feeling and why we are feeling heightened. With this awareness, we can take control of the situation internally. We can avoid in becoming overwhelmed. As we train ourselves in regulating emotions, we become less attached to the situations around us, and find strategies on how to cope with them.

Physically, we can help protect our immune system and support a healthy body. As stress is one of the leading causes of death, we can protect our immune system as we control how we react to situations. With heightened emotions, you may find that you express anger, and start to yell and give into those emotions. When we give into anger, for example, we promote our heart rate, our blood pressure, our stress hormones, and our body temperature to increase. If we express anger often, we put our bodies more in risk of a weak immune system.

Spiritually when we are emotionally regulated, we have a better understanding of ourselves, and know our strengths and weaknesses. We become more in-tuned with ourselves, creating a stronger connection. We become aware of what we need and aware of the things that hurt and protect us.

As there are benefits for all aspects of life for emotion regulation, there are multiple ways to help train yourself by addressing each aspect. For example when training yourself while addressing your physical aspect, you can use physical activity to help train your mind. Put all of your focus and awareness on the activity when you are running, such as being mindful of your movements and heart rate. This will help train your mind to bring awareness to the self when experiencing a high heart rate. Ensure that you enjoy the physical activity and that it involves a full range of motion!

Spirituality, you can practice mindful meditation that allows you to focus on your breathing. With this, you brain will be trained to bring your focus internally during heightened times.

Mentally, you can conduct written reflections. Conducting reflections will have you become aware internally, as well as aware of the external factors and environment. With this training, you will become more aware of how you react to certain situation, how you make decisions, and learn how to adapt to those situations in a positive manner. As we learn about ourselves, we have the power to make adjustments.

Emotionally, you can participate in mindful breathing. With this, you become in control of your breathing, which helps you lower your heart rate, release stress, and release muscle tension. As you practice this method often, you will have the ability to resort to this method during heightened times.

With these methods, remember to practice them in calm states, allowing you to have the ability to resort to them during heightened states.

Overall, it is important to ensure that we learn to regulate our emotions to prepare ourselves in heightened times. There are many benefits on regulating emotions, from emotional to physical. As there are various ways on how to train yourself, you can chose your training method!
