Getting Settled In!

We made it! We have finally arrived in Edmonton Alberta! My fiancé, his mother, aunt, and I had taken on the long drive, 36 hours to be exact. We had driven through a large portion through Ontario, as well as driven across Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The three day drive and the unpacking for a few days had wiped us out.

As we had worked so hard, we have decided to take a break and go on a mini vacation day trip to Banff Alberta, which turned out to be one of the best days of my life! As we met up two of my fiancé’s friends who live in Banff, we explored the area, along with viewing Bow River!

On the way back, we had the privilege of viewing the Northern Lights. As it is early in the season, we did not see the colours with our own eyes, but saw what appeared to be dancing fog in the sky. However, my fiancé’s phone was able to capture the beautiful colours!

As we dropped off my fiancé’s family at the airport on Saturday August 5th, we are now on our own in a new province, trying to gather everything as we try to build our routines. It was a tough farewell as it would be the last one for a while. We had to say farewell to a lot of loved ones, which was tough mentally and emotionally.

As we have jobs lined up, we are working on getting our house situated and organized. I had personally started my job today, which I am grateful to be a part of as I will be completing my practicum there for my final year of my Bachelor of Social Work program as well. I will have two separate roles, one in which I will take on as a student, and the other will be a paid role. The details of the roles are still to be determined specifically as we are figuring out what I can do for them. I have the privilege to be helping Aboriginal women overcome systematic barriers as I help them get back on their feet by providing and referring them to supports. As the program is so new, I get to help shape and build the program!

My fiancé will be going for his welding test this Thursday, in which I have no doubt he will get the job. The employer there stated that they had already written up his contract as he had seen his welding work through photos that my fiancé had sent.

As we are settling in with our new lives and building our routines, my fiancé and I both call our family members from back in Ontario often.  Moving away has both its challenges and positives. As we are able to afford a place of our own and have an open wide of opportunities, we are moved away from our family and friends.  However luckily, we are only a 3.5 hour plane ride away and a phone call away. As moving across provinces it bittersweet, our loved ones still support us.

Within this new area, my fiancé and I have already met great people, such as our downstairs neighbours and the people at my work. My fiancé had even connected well with our neighbor.

Overall as changes occur throughout life, there appears to be positives and negatives, or pros and cons. This is a great learning and growing experience for us in many aspects. I personally am getting into a new hobby, which is learning the drums! I was lucky enough to sign up for my first drum lesson this Friday evening! I am eager and excited to learn that new skill!

Fortunately, we also have a shop in which my fiancé is able to work in. He loves to work on cars, bikes, and other sorts of things that involve mechanical work. He is the type of person that always needs to work on something. Even when I was at work today, he worked on my car all day. After the long drive, both of our vehicles needed work.

Additionally, as we are putting our place together, we get excited for the little things, such as a blue shaggy rug that we had purchased for our living room.

Overall as we are discovering new things, we are also keeping in touch with our inner-child.

Thank you for reading! Until next time,

Christy
